The view from the boating house at the Lago di Braies in the Dolomites in northern Italy, on a cloudy fall day.
Another throwback to my trip to the Dolomites last year. I hiked up to the stunning Lago di Sorapis, which has cloudy blue water thanks to the minerals it contains. Unfortunately it was cloudy and started to rain just as I arrived at the lake, but the hike is stunning, with views of the surrounding valleys from the narrow trail.
During summer the Lago di Braies in the Dolomites in northern Italy is crowded with daytrippers hiking the short circuit around the lake. Come winter though, and you have the place almost to yourself especially on weekdays. This shot was taken in fall last year; the weather wasn’t great, but the clouds add to the atmosphere and I loved the bright splash of color from the trees turning orange all around the lake.
During the summer Italy’s Lago di Braies is overwhelmed with day visitors, but early in the morning in fall it’s peaceful and (almost) deserted – with the exception of a few photographers walking around at sunrise. The colorful trees are beautiful, especially on a still day when they reflect with the mountains in the water.
Right now it’s 28 degrees C and sunny where I’m sitting, but I was going through some older pictures from September last year when I spent a week in northern Italy, and I came across this one. Just looking at it makes me want to sit down next to a fire with a good book!
It was a cloudy morning at the beautiful Lago di Braies; I went super early to try to catch the sunrise, but with the thick low cloud cover I had no chance! It was still worth the visit though, since it’s a beautiful spot regardless of the weather, and it was almost deserted since it was low season, early in the morning, and the weather was bad.
I post-processed this one in Lightroom by lowering the vibrance to make it appear colder; the autumnal orange and yellow trees in the background still give it some warmth though. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out in the end, even though I didn’t have high hopes due to the weather!
This is a view of the island in the middle of Lake Bled, shot from one of the row boats available for rent. It only takes about 10-15 minutes to row out to the island, which has a church and café on it. The lake water has a beautiful blue hue to it thanks to the minerals that have dissolved in it, and here the color of the sky is beautifully matched by the water.
I just got back home from a week long trip to Austria and Slovenia – for a long time I’ve wanted to visit Bled, but inconvenient connections to Bled meant it was never feasible for a weekend for me before. I was planning on being in Austria for the week, and so I finally decided to drive the couple of hours extra to get to Bled – and it was definitely worth it! I have plenty more pictures and information about my trip of course, but for now, I leave you with this beautiful view of the island on Bled Lake as seen from the southern shore of the lake.
